New General Catalogue objects

Of course, there are many excellent and interesting objects visible in dark skies. Initially, I tackled the Messier list. Now, I regularly view other deep sky objects. This page contains a log of NGC objects viewed.

The New General Cataogue (NGC) of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars was compiled by Dreyer in 1888. It contains 7840 objects. It is supplemented by two IC catalogues.

See the other deep sky list for red stars, supernovae, LEDA galaxies, etc. observed! Also note the "other" page contains the cross-reference lists for Collinder, Arp, etc.

This is helpful as I view the RASC "Finest NGCs" and consider the daunting Herschel 400 list...

Symbols legend:
* - asterisk, denotes an object I wish to revisit
ƒ - latin f with hook, for RASC Finest NGC objects
⁴ - superscript 4, items on the Herschel 400 observing list

The small open cluster of stars in the middle of the Rosette Nebula (which is in Monoceros). There are 5 or 6 brighter stars that form a rough trapezoid shape. Didn't make good notes. While working on the multiple panels for the Rosette in Monoceros, I bumped into the open cluster. Tons of stars! The right or western edge of the cluster features a funny backwards question mark. Imaged with the BGO on 30 Jan '21. Star TYC 00154-0595 1 seems unusually bright in the image... aka Collinder 102, OCL 514.

In Monoceros. Very interesting. At low power in C14, a V-shape. A bright star (!) at the tip. Like the nebula was trailing away. Like a comet. Nice. Pleasing in 27mm. Cool shape. Neat object. Diffuse cone shape or fan shape. Viewed on 6 Apr '14. aka Caldwell 46. Imaged with BGO on 7 Dec '16.
NGC 2264 - Christmas Tree Cluster and Cone Nebula ⁴

Star hopped west from Mebsuta in Gemini Verified in the correct area. Nothing obvious. At 48x, saw a big box, a big square shape, almost like a dipper, with a handle. The bright star at the end of the handle was HD 47836. The open cluster, according to ST3, was at the south-west corner of the pot. Faint star in the middle of the box, Tycho 01901-1425 1 at mag 10.2. Also spotted faintly Tycho 01901-0627 1 at mag 10.6. Tried to increase power but lost it! Attempted with ETX 90 on 5 Apr '20. Medium-sized open cluster with faint stars which are the same intensity as the field stars. About 3 stars are quite bright, south of centre. There's a tight equal double south-east of centre. Overall shape reminds me of a starfish. Imaged with BGO on 27 Dec '20. Also known as Collinder 113, Melotte 50, Raab 38, and OCL 471.

Viewed at 145x in Apr '14. Not far from Castor and Pollux. Reminded me of the Helix planetary nebula. Not round. Seemed to have two lobes. Found some photos that matched what I was seeing. Very neat object, very pleasing at 217x. Not regular. Gives the impression of spinning, swooping, things trailing off. Like a kids toy windmill. Double vanes. And I noted now the bright point or fuzziness in the middle. There's a wide double above, with mag 12 and 13 stars, the brightest being GSC 01922-1629. This pair is aligned like the lobes, parallel to the direction of the poles. Meaning the lobes are oriented north-east through south-west. Imaged with SMU BGO on 27 Apr '16. Shot again on 1 Nov '17. Panned from Trifid. Bumped into it! A small cluster in the 55mm in the C14. Orange star. A double (HD 164562). A bit of nebulousity? Quite small in the Tele Vue refractor. To the north-west, there was this orangey star. Noted a string of stars. Nice. Blue white stars in the cluster, aka Collinder 361. Neat alignment of about three stars, equally bright. Plus really faint points. Streamer to the south-west. Equal pair to the north-east. Lots of stars in the field. At low power, a streamer off to the right. Really neat. Seeing was not great. This marked the final NGC in the RASC Finest list! Very exciting. Viewed on 11 Jun '18. Learned it was visible from backyard, in a notch in the trees. Aimed blindly. Compact. A couple of orange stars within, others are white and blue-white. Outer ring and an inner core. Bright orange star HD 164562 nearby. Imaged with C8-40D early 16 Jun '20. That means I have imaged all the Finest! Above the spout of the teapot. Imaged again early 17 Jun '20. See image with cluster near centre. Captured many frames and darks...

In Aquila. A large object. A planetary nebula. Looked like a flame! I thought there was something "going up." A non-circular shape. Increased power to 107x. Had a good look. Very interesting. Just barely visible in image captured on 4 Jul '16. I only learned of this via SkyTools. It shows 7325 between 7331 and 7326, suggests it is larger than 7326 and quotes the magnitude as 14.9. Saw a couple of faint stars, including Tycho 01178-0738 1, to the north. Did not look uniform. Was it curved or bent? Faint. Nuts! Tried on 8 Oct '16. Fantastic view in so-so photo. Easy to see the thin black lumpy dust lane cutting through the middle of the galaxy. Super-bright core. Very interesting. Imaged with BGO on 9 Jan '20. aka MCG 3-1-20 or PGC 218. aka UGC 8 and Caldwell 43.
